A low-key performance in a low-key atmosphere - almost 500 fewer fans than watched the FA Cup tie between these sides just over two months ago - got its just reward. Lancaster beat Chorley without breaking sweat, Chorley's lack of firepower proving the biggest problem for the home side.
Lancaster had a strongish side out, featuring Hughes and Sullivan up front, and a familiar face at left back in Phil Bayliss. Perhaps our esteemed chairman will notice now that they have signed him.... Chorley made a couple of changes, including the return of Andy Mason up front, who is a fair way off fitness on this evidence, and the more impressive contribution of Keith Hill on the left of the back three.
After Bracey was called into action early on, Chorley played some good football and perhaps had marginally the better of the first half. Vermiglio was prominent in some neat passing moves, and Clitheroe initially seemed keen to impress his former team-mates. As ever, though, there were no decent shots on target from Chorley, and as luck would have it Lancaster were awarded a mystery penalty on 38 minutes. A cross came over, a forward tumbled acrobatically, neither player nor supporter raised a voice in protest, and the spot kick was awarded. Sullivan converted.
At the start of the second half, the game was over when Hughes scored with a far-post header that Bracey could not quite claw out of the net. Vermiglio had the only two shots on target of the game in 60 seconds around the hour mark, when a header and shot both tested Welsby. Bracey came out on top in a one on one with Sullivan, before Lancaster substituted both their strikers as it was clear that Chorley were never going to score twice. The best chance we had of a Magpies player getting on the scoresheet was when Hill wrongfooted Bracey with a backpass that hit the side netting just behind the post. Queeley replaced Mason, who looked tired, and ran about willingly, but had little possession and less support.
When a corner bounced across the area and nobody was able to get a touch on it, you know it was not to be Chorley's day. Eatock's late penalty, coming a few seconds before the final whistle, was confidently taken but utterly pointless. Fans may be surprised to learn that we have actually managed to get ourselves eliminated from the various League cups now, and the home game against Kendal in the Lancashire Cup offers our last chance of silverware this season.
