Mason, Wilkinson and Molyneaux were all omitted from the starting line-up in favour of Barker, Emmett and Paul Eatock. However it didn't do any good as the Magpies once again had trouble breaking Steels down. The only goal of the game was scored after 31 uneventful minutes by Russell Green from an Illingworth centre. Chorley had a chance to go level a few minutes later, but Barker couldn't convert Wright's cross. Wilkinson came on at half-time and helped pep things up. Hogan headed an Emmett cross just over, and Emmett himself threatened with a long-range shot and an inswinging corner that had to be headed off the line. At the other end, Eatock did the necessary when called into action, whilst his brother came closest to forcing extra time when he hit the bar with five minutes to go. So Chorley bowed out of the Trophy at the first attempt, as is customary these days, but with a little more luck in front of goal they could have progressed here.
