Chorley's second half fightback was not enough to overcome the disadvantage their lax first half had created. Stocksbridge looked superior in all departments early on, and soon went ahead when Houldsworth allowed the ball to bounce over his head, and Hannah lobbed Gillies expertly. The same player put Stocksbridge two goals up when a collective defensive failing, with special mention for cock-ups from Smith and Woods, allowed him time to shoot from just outside the box. Smith then pulled one back after Horrock's shot was well-saved, but then Chorley shot themselves in the foot by conceding their third goal in a 12 minute spell when Bray was the beneficiary of some very fortunate rebounds and bounces to score from close range. The rest of the first half promised very little. although Pennington just missed getting on the end of Carvill's cross, then Carvill himself headed just wide.

The second half brought a marked improvement, aided in part by Steels switching off, but mainly by Smith being pushed up front. Corvino, who had looked out of his depth at this level, and Hutchinson started to look more like a central midfield partnership, and the defending, which had been very casual in the first half, was stepped up, perhaps as a result of the most effective defender being moved up front and a change to 3-4-3. Pennington made an impression when he expertly made a saving tackle when one-on-one. He backed off the forward as far as the edge of the area, then dived in and emerged with the ball.

Smith shot wide and headed just over, but also made a real nuisance of himself up front and created chances for the other forwards, most notably Eatock, who will know that he should have had a hat-trick rather than the one he did get. He was put clean through by Smith, checked back and left two defenders and the goalie on the deck, but shot wide. He then scuffed another wide, before scoring the most difficult chance when he hit a far-post cross on the volley and, despite an imperfect contact, it bounced in. Gillies then made a great save so keep Chorley in it, and Haworth and Hutchinson had chances to keep Chorley in the tie, but it wasn't to be.

The positive thing to take out of this game was the attacking potential of Smith, although I would have liked to see him play with the swift and tricky Horrocks and Queeley.
