This game will probably be unique in Magpies history, because I'll bet it's never happened before that we have used three keepers in the same game, yet that's what happened today! But more of that later, because the game started quietly enough, and once we'd weathered their early attacks we started to gain a certain amount of supremacy. A Beckham-style free-kick just outside the box from Wallace was very well saved by their keeper but he was definitely at fault for our opening goal round the half-hour mark when Wallace again took a free-kick, but this time from almost on the touchline. Despite the difficult angle he still went for goal, catching the keeper unawares, who managed to save it but couldn't hold it, and Evans was first to the loose ball, netting from a similarly awkward angle.
Unfortunately we had failed to capitalise on other opportunities when the incident which was to change the match occurred about five minutes from the interval - a piece of sloppy defending gave their no.10 and top scorer Gary Hurlstone a clear run on goal, and when he tried to round Marshy he went down in a heap. Inevitably, the referee's verdict was a penalty, but the dreaded red card was brandished as well, to add insult to injury! The sooner commonsense returns to the rulebook and defending sides are not punished twice for their transgressions, the better in my view!
Enter keeper no.2, Steve Hook, temporarily abandoning his defensive duties. Guessing correctly, he actually saved the resulting penalty, and even made a couple of more saves before it was decreed that he was needed in his more familiar position, and Ian Dickinson was sacrificed so that we could introduce keeper no.3 straight from the subs.bench - Chris Blakeman!
Managed to survive till half-time, but when we came out after the interval we knew it was likely to be the Alamo all over again. Imagine our amazement, then, when we started the second half on the attack, had a perfectly good penalty appeal turned down, then increased our lead through Neil Matthews, and as the second half unfolded we had a certain number of other opportunities, albeit from breakaways, and sadly none taken.
Chris Blakeman made a number of saves in the course of the half, but he did look somewhat suspect when the ball was in the air, and inevitably their first goal eventually arrived still with almost twenty minutes to play. The rest of the story hardly needs to be told, as we've had this scenario so many times this season - we managed to survive until the last couple of minutes, then they scored again, and would have got the winner too had one of their players not completely miskicked with only Blakeman to beat with virtually the last act of the game. Had they scored then, though, it would have been a great injustice to the Magpies who had been the better side when both teams had eleven on the pitch, and even matched them most of the time while we were outnumbered.
A memorable match, then, and one which gave great credit to the whole team for their resilience. Surprisingly, too, I feel I have to give some credit to the referee who at least had the courage to face the mass of Chorley fans and players gathered in the Club for the England game afterwards to explain his decisions - he did manage to escape in one piece, which didn't seem likely at one point! And that's what we had to show for our endeavours for the third time in a week - each time we had been ahead almost at full-time, only to have a potential win transformed downwards into a draw. The difference this time was that overall today's point was one gained, not two lost!
