Unibond League Division One

Although the game kicked off at 1 p.m., nobody appeared to have told the Chorley players, and so we were two down in six minutes. Hurlstone scored after two minutes, and Fothergill showed impressive pace and strength when breaking through for the second. It was obvious that Stocksbridge were far more interested than Chorley - they were first to every ball, keener in the tackle and dominated the midfield in the game's opening period. Chorley responded to some entirely deserved barracking from the terraces by putting a few moves together, one of which led to Paul Allen heading over from four yards when unmarked. You couldn't help but think that it would have been a great chance for Swailes to have broken his duck, but he was absent with a bruised foot. Critchley became another casualty of the weekend when he was withdrawn on 35 minutes with an ankle problem. He was applauded off generously, more for his unstinting efforts all season than his performance in this game it must be said. Despite Chorley's improvement, half-time arrived as usual without a shot on target.

The Magpies came out of the blocks very well for the second half and looked dangerous for three minutes until Stocksbridge scored again through Robinson at the far post, with McLellan, who had an indifferent game at best, nowhere to be seen. Two minutes later Barker, who was playing with an ankle problem like Critchley, mustered a decent shot on target, but the keeper gathered easily. Chorley then went shot crazy and had no fewer than two other attempts on goal in the next 10 minutes! The ever industrious Fleming hit the post with a fine curling shot, and the rebound fell to Ian Leather of all people, who couldn't get his shot on target. Shortly afterwards Griffin took weeks to shoot when unmarked from 6 yards out and his shot was charged down. To be fair, Chorley played some pretty football in the second half, but Stocksbridge provided a lesson in how to take your chances. Furthermore, Gaffey is not a creative winger, so why is he played there? He is plainly a defender, and a fair one at that, but he can't pass well enough to be a winger. Having said that, Gibson carried on in exactly the same vein when he replaced him just after half-time. Simon Kay created far more from central defence, and Ian Leather got into the box more often than either Gaffey or Gibson. Ultimately, one goal from the last four games tells its own story for Chorley, and new faces in midfield and attack will be required for next season if we are to see an improvement.
