Unibond League Division One

A lacklustre display meant Chorley failed to score for the second successive match. Despite one-way traffic in the first half, the forward line of Butterworth and Mason could not turn pressure into goals, and the expected second half onslaught never got going. Matters were not helped by the combination of injuries, suspensions and work commitments which saw the best central midfielder on the pitch, Hogan, filling in at left back. Although he played very well out of position, what might he have done in the middle if only Bayliss had been passed fit? As it was, Mills and Bold worked hard but lacked inspiration in the centre, and Emmett had one of his off days.

As for the forwards, Mason never got going and Butterworth missed a couple of clear cut chances in the first half. Granted, a less pacy, aggressive player would probably not have got into position for them in the first place, but he needs to work on his finishing. Right on the stroke of half-time, he was clean through but delayed his shot until the keeper got across.

Stocksbridge are a limited team who came for a point and scrapped for it. They were given free license to waste time by the referee, until injury time in the second half when he suddenly started booking people. Talk about locking the stable door after the horse has bolted. The goalie had been dallying over goal kicks for fully half an hour when he was cautioned for not releasing the ball for a corner. But to focus on that would be to ignore the fact that Chorley failed to cause them problems. Mills was replaced by Barker, who tried hard but didn't improve matters much, then Wilkinson came on for Mason. He did liven things up a bit up front, and provided the best chance of the second half when he turned on a sixpence from a corner and sent a low cross whistling across the face of goal. It only wanted a touch, but nobody was quite close enough. Bold had the only decent shot on target, but even though it was well saved it would have been chalked off for offside in any case.

It's not over yet, but this was a game we could really have done with winning. Now we have to take something from Alfreton to remain in touch with the play-offs.
