A brilliant Chorley performance capped nine months of hard work to put us in the playoffs. The disappointing performance at Brig was put to bed in the best possible way with our biggest away victory of the season, alongside the 3-0 victory at Trafford. Hogan replaced Bold in central midfield as his suspension ended, and had a steady game. Mason started ahead of Butterworth who was still feeling a bit delicate after the kicking he got on Monday, and Bracey returned in goal.
After a nervy start, in which Mills headed Chorley's best chance over from a corner, Chorley slowly started to assert themselves. A neat Varley header over a defender freed Barker, whose lobbed cross was headed goalwards by Wilkinson for Siddall to save one-handed. Stocksbridge then came into the game more, and were unlucky not to take the lead when they hit the bar and put the rebound over. A couple of minutes later we were in front. Varley hared down the wing to the byline and banged a hard low ball in, which Mills turned over the line from six yards. Wild celebrations followed, as Witton were already losing by this stage.
Bracey pulled off a decent one-on-one stop, then Varley almost set Mason up for another but a defender headed his header clear. Barker put a header just wide from a corner, then Wilkinson put enough pressure on a defender to make him hit the post from an Emmett cross.
Half time arrived with no further score, then Emmett calmed everyone down with a rare headed goal, which went in off a post from a neat Barker cross. Chorley then coasted, Mills having the best chance to kill the match but his shot was expertly pushed round the post by Siddall. Then on 72 minutes, the defence went to sleep and Tevendale scored from close range after a good break. They had one more chance, which went just wide, then Chorley got back on top. A half-cleared corner felll to Mills on the edge of the box, and his shot took a couple of deflections on the way home. Five minutes later a foul on Eatock produced a free kick, which David himself touched to Wilkinson. He shot from the edge of the box, not especially powerfully, but good enough to beat Siddall, who then had a bit of a do at the annoying number 11 on his own side. So it ended, and after a tense wait, the stalemate at Belper was confirmed and the celebrations began. Congratulations are due to players and management for a fantastic first season, let's hope we can go better yet.
