Chorley began brightly against a team they had demolished 4-1 only 7 competitive games previously. Barker made a great break down the left wing, and his cross was banged against Siddall in goal from close range by Wilkinson. Jones put the rebound well over. It wasn't one-way traffic though as Steels showed a worrying ability to carve through Chorley's makeshift defence, and sent a couple of shots just past the post from the edge of the box.

Jones, who was doing well early on in midfield, started off a couple of moves and a couple of half chances resulted. On 25 minutes, though, Knox caught Varley in possession in the centre circle and ran unopposed to beat Bracey with a fine shot into the corner. Jones missed a chance at the other end before defensive blunder number 2, when Knox was allowed to beat everyone in defence, and could hardly believe his luck when his shot was blocked by Bracey but fell back into his path. He slotted the ball home into the empty net as bodies lay all around, the legacy of a hatful of poorly times tackles. It would have been funny if it had happened at the other end, as it was it seemed a bit tragic.

There still wasn't much wrong with the rest of Chorley's game, if you took the defending out of the equation, and Mills headed over the bar when unopposed eight yards out at the end of a super move when the ball was played out from the back. Four minutes later, Barker got a deserved goal when he cut in from the edge of the area after a smart turn left two defenders floundering, and his shot somehow slipped under Siddall and in.

The Magpies strove for the equaliser, which would have been a fair reflection of play, but all they managed was a booking for dissent. Varley was penalised for what looked rather like a case of double standards by the ref when Steels were allowed to take a quick free kick, but when Chorley tried the same seconds later they were pulled back, purportedly because the ball was moving. Whatever, yet another booking for dissent does not help the cause one bit.

The second half was nowhere near as exciting as the first. In part, this was due to Stocksbridge's limited ambition - having taken the lead, they had no wish to surrender it. Cooper, introduced in favour of the tiring Tulloch, looked sparky and created a decent chance for himself when he beat two men with his first touch and cut inside, but Siddall was equal to his shot. Then disaster struck once again, as Varley, who had a game to forget, underhit a backpass by such a large margin that the forward lurking on his shoulder was able to stride past him, round Bracey and pick his spot. Varley made a great effort to get back to the line, but he could only deflect the shot in. He was mercifully withdrawn shortly afterwards for Repullo, who played on the right of a back three as Cooper pushed up to join Wilkinson and Eatock in the attack.

Stocksbridge were certainly not going to let us back into the game now, and it was backs to the wall at all times as Chorley could not break through the blanket defence. A few half-chances were created, but nothing likely to trouble the scorers, whilst at the other end Repullo, who yet again looked cool and well capable of playing at this level, underhit a backpass from the same spot as Varley's fateful error, but got away with it.

To be fair to Varley, there may well be some problem with the pitch in that area that caused him to scuff his pass. It's also not fair to blame this defeat on him, after all he is playing out of position. However, he did make two similarly grave errors on Tuesday evening, which he got away with. By playing him at centre back, where he has tried manfully, we create two problems for ourselves. Not only does the team have to contend with him occasionally attempting the kind of balls or tackles that a full-back can try, safe in the knowledge that, if it goes wrong, there will still be a central defender on hand, but also we sorely miss his defensive ability and attacking drive at right back, where Bayliss, still not fit after his operation in the summer, is too often peripheral. I understand that the management feel that Repullo needs to be brought on gently before he is ready for the first team. Nonetheless it does seem perverse to persist in playing an excellent right back out of position, where he is becoming more uncomfortable by the game, when there are a couple of promising centre backs in and around the squad (Boothby being the other) who are not being played because of a lack of experience.
