Shaun Teale named himself in central defence and fellow debutant John Bluck in central midfield, with numerous other positional changes, many of which seemed to weaken rather than strengthen the side. Whilst a point at Stocksbridge is not to be sniffed at, there was precious little positive play from either side and few talking points arising from the action on the pitch.
Chorley dominated the opening 20 minutes in terms of possession, but did not register a shot on target. Vermiglio came closest when he challenged the keeper and won the ball, then tried to chip it back over his head but cleared the bar. Queeley was causing all sorts of problems, but Ellison's lack of physical presence told against him, despite some deft touches. The question of whether they make a good forward pairing was rendered academic on 42 minutes, when Ellison fell awkwardly after jumping with the keeper and dislocated his shoulder. Embarrassingly, Chorley had not brought their physio to the match, so no effective treatment was possible in situ, and Ellison headed off to hospital.
Smith replaced him, but Stocksbridge finished the half the stronger without mustering a shot on target.
The second half was slightly less dull, with Smith at least managing to get a few shots and headers in, although the keeper was not tested. He was booked for raising his arm when jumping, the only booking of a generally good-natured contest. Queeley should have won a penalty when he was pushed over in the box whilst rushing to get onto Bluck's cross from the left. Stocksbridge were also more threatening in this half, with Gillies forced to tip a back header over the bar, then Woods making a fine saving tackle by the near post. Queeley put in an excellent low cross which Borland just failed to get onto at the far post, then half-hearted appeals for handballs in both areas went unheeded, and the game petered out.
The point is most welcome, of course, as is the clean sheet. All the teams immediately above us picked up points as well, so we remain third bottom, but pull further away from the relegation zone thanks to Rossendale's defeat to Brigg. However the team selection was most curious and seemed to upset the balance of the side. Vermiglio and Borland are surely the two most effective central midfielders at the club, and their drive was wasted on the wing. Bluck had a decent game in the centre, but McGrath flattered to deceive. Ellison did not look like a centre forward and has looked more effective when played deeper. The defence looked a little shaky at times, apart from Callaghan, and the omission of Pennington and Squires was curious, unless the latter was unavailable (again). Still, it would be wrong to be too critical when a point has been gained.
