There are days when everything goes wrong, and those when everything goes right – fortunately for us, this was one of the latter. As if to confirm that we are the best travellers in the Division, we gave the Steels a goal start, yet still emerged on top, even if we needed a little help from Lady Luck (better known as the referee!) to ensure that the last few minutes were a little more comfortable than they might otherwise have been.
We almost got off to the perfect start when our first attack in the opening minute ended with Adam Roscoe lobbing Stocksbridge keeper Hodgson but his effort was slightly off target. Nevertheless we still had the edge during the opening quarter of the game but as so often without anything to show for our efforts. Steels, however, scored with their first clear opening of the game after 23 minutes when Zoll finished clinically when given the opportunity from a through ball as we failed adequately to clear our lines following a free-kick into our area.
Soon afterwards they should have doubled their lead when the ever-dangerous Zoll set up his strike partner for a point-blank chance which he spurned, missing the target with only Priestley to beat. That let-off spurred us to greater efforts and we gained our reward shortly before half-time when Thompson charged down an attempted clearance, then followed up the loose ball before slotting past the advancing keeper from the corner of the box.
After half-time we continued to look slightly the more threatening of the two sides and took the lead around the hour mark, when captain Jamie Vermiglio smashed the ball home from a couple of yards when Tench’s shot came back off the sprawling keeper. Still we pressed, but Steels looked dangerous on the break, especially when Zoll was on the ball. Roscoe’s height and endeavour were then sacrificed in favour of the more defensively minded Joe Gibbons, and a long rearguard action was then anticipated. How surprising, then, that just as we expected to sit back on our slender lead we actually increased it in our next attack. It may have been a breakaway, but what a quality move it was – a little reminiscent of one of last week’s strikes against Ossett, it involved a passing move out of defence the full length of the pitch, ending once again with Thompson setting up Wright, a chance which as usual he gratefully accepted.
Stocksbridge rarely threatened after that, apart from a couple of demands for penalties, the second of which, following a lunge by Gibbons, looked far more clearcut than some which have already been awarded against us this season. Still, perhaps we are due that bit of luck which has often eluded us this time around. Not that Stocksbridge were prepared to agree – they rather lost it in the closing stages, I’m afraid, and a succession of bookings led to their number 4 having to take the long walk to have first go at the showers. And if Chris Thompson over-reacted to a decision given against him by a linesman, calling him a "slaphead", that was nothing compared to some of the names handed out to the officials by the Stocksbridge contingent at the final whistle! Not that we were worried – the last few minutes were made considerably easier by their late indiscipline.
To put this performance into context, before this game Stocksbridge had been unbeaten for eight games, and had won their previous three home games, scoring four goals in each of the last two. So, for us to go there and win, conceding only one in the process, was a considerable achievement. Oh yes, and one of our small number of supporters won first prize in the raffle too, though modesty prevents me from telling you who it was!
If I give the man of the match award to Chris Thompson, on the basis of his making one goal and scoring another, it’s not to understate the efforts of everyone – Wrighty ran tirelessly throughout, and fully deserved his goal, Roscoe gave yet more evidence of the quality leader of an attack he is likely to become, the whole defence snuffed out the Steels’ attack for most of the game, Phil Priestley dealt with everything he needed to efficiently, though it wasn’t one of his busiest days, and the midfield worked hard throughout. Another quality team performance, if anything even better than last week’s, given the higher standard of opposition and the fact that it was away from home. If our home results can continue to match those on the road, we can only continue to climb the table, and the playoffs may not eventually be an unrealistic target.
