Unibond League Division One

This match started with great expectations as word spread around the ground that Ken had signed two new strikers. Indeed, towering over Graham Hill during the warm-up was a giant of a centre-forward, no doubt talking tactics. Also two unusual-sounding surnames, one quite poetic if not exotic, greeted fans as the teamsheet was read out.

Ken's programme excuses re his disappointment over Barker being poached didn't really add up - Barker had been underused mainly as a sub before the Mossley approach and, like Thommo II, presumably fancied a game of football sometime. But at least the manager had acted quickly to bring in reinforcements. An evenly matched first-half saw Mills come close with a header that struck the crossbar with the keeper well beaten. A bizarre bounce also had him fumbling to stop the ball crossing the line. The new midfield of Fleming, Challender and Smyth looked enterprising with Flem taking on an interesting - though not entirely successful - roving role, popping up on the right, left and in the box. Maybe he should have stuck to the right to provide his usual dangerous crosses. The best crosses into the box seemed to come from Swailes, to .. well nobody, as he couldn't be in two places at once. One or two rash challenges, Smyth targeted on more than one occasion (this was to prove significant), led to long stoppages on both sides.

Chorley's back-four seemed solid throughout, little troubled by the Steelers' strikers. However, again a well-balanced match was upset by a bizarre incident on the hour. Smyth dribbling through the centre beat two players only to be clumsily hacked about the shins by a third - you could hear the crack in the stands. Smyth jumped up quickly, and was surrounded by Stocksbridge players, then Challender and Fleming. The ref - who generally had had a good game - faced by the developing melee, pulled out his red card and most supporters thought SPS's Ronan would walk. Instead, to everyone's surprise, Smyth was dismissed, presumably for jumping up too quickly to face his antagonist.

Chorley pushed forward and Hook came close, but it was Stocksbridge who showed more enterprise in the closing half hour, bringing several smart saves from Marsh. The new 'giant' was sent on but, despite his size, showed few footballing skills being outjumped by SPS's shorter defenders on every occasion. With the clock ticking down, the second newcomer was brought on, his one chance ballooning skywards. It is said that after the match he complained bitterly about being sidelined for so long and promptly collected his cards. If so, at 5 minutes, his was probably the shortest career at Chorley FC.

Alas, fans were left wondering what the Dickens was going on as Victory Park changed from a stadium of great expectations into a bleak house. Chorley's traditional injury time generosity resulted in yet again a late free-kick and goal for their opponents, Askey the scorer. (That's late goals against in five from the last seven league games - and would have been six but for Congleton's penalty miss).

As against Squires Gate, the opposing keeper hardly had a shot on target to deal with and the new strikers if anything were less effective than the ones they replaced (though this might be unfair to the second who hardly had a kick). Surely, the manager should be trying out his new players on the training ground, not in desperation against top opponents.

For the record, the name of the player who had a brief encounter (quick literary switch from Dickens to Noel Coward) was Kelechi Okorie.

As a result of the late strike, Stocksbridge moved back up to third place in the League, yet at no time dominated. As for CFC, reportedly, the new floodlights will be installed this week. Things can only get brighter!
