Goalscorers: Gary Martindale

We lined up playing three centre backs, four in midfield, and Barry in the hole behind two front men 3:4:1:2. Chorley, at 1-0 up through Martindale, were denied a certain penalty by a poor referee, who seemed to have his own set of rules. In the early stages we created some good openings with Bluck, and Barry combining well to set up half chances. Wright and Martindale seemed to have a good understanding, but Wright had a poor game in terms of his finishing. He got into excellent positions on several occasions and either shot weakly, hit the post, or was saved. On another day he would have had a hat-trick.

Vermiglio was outstanding in the second half. Armstrong seemed to lack a little confidence, but has physically greater presence, and he may settle in well. Burscough are a classy side, and several of their players had good games. Crowder (3) had an excellent game from left back, and lobbed Horridge cutting in from the left flank to equalise. Several probing passes, combined with mobile forwards on the left and right gave our somewhat slower three centre halves plenty of difficulties. A break down the right flank and some neat play in the box led to their striker finishing well taking the lead before half time. They replaced new signing Tony Gray with leading scorer Paul Gedman after only 25 minutes owing to an injury.

In the second half Teale was replaced by Callaghan in the back three, Dickinson was replaced by a young left sided attacker "Damo" Walsh? He clung to the touch line and cracked in some excellent crosses. We clearly had a team pattern of play to get the ball wide, but this was made difficult by some poor passing from the back. Wright hit the post with a good shot following a fine move, Walsh was unable to connect properly with the rebound. We were caught offside several times, and the front runners were rather frustrated. No sign of Hardy, rumour has it he has had a serious domestic problem and may not be available.

Young James Mullineux came on in his usual role of defensive midfielder, as a change in shape was forced upon us by the rather pedantic referee, with an all too obvious air of self importance, who proceeded to send off Horridge to the "sin bin" for ten minutes for a challenge outside the box on their striker. Martindale deputised in goal and made a good fisted save. Burscough's frontmen seemed largely ineffective in the second half: most of their attacks lacked any real bite of finish. Most of our efforts were through balls to Wright who could not finish.

The final goal from their young substitute Johnson was an excellent strike from 25 yards that gave Horridge no chance and served to underline the main differences between the sides. Burscough's defenders are unsurprisingly younger and quicker than ours. They have effective players on both flanks particularly Crowder and Bowen on the left. Vermiglio is the heartbeat of our team and inspires the rest. Against Unibond 1 defenders, Peter Wright and Gary Martindale will score plenty of goals. An entertaining match the score should have been 3:2 or even a draw. Terrific Hot-Pot pie, but peas were cold. £7.50 admission is a bit steep for a friendly against a lower placed team. Good hospitality as usual from our friends at Victoria Park, and good luck to them this season.
