Your all time Chorley fc xl

Postby reco » Wed Sep 14, 2016 9:20 pm

I'm helping someone who is writing a book about groundhopping with a short Q and A about Chorley FC and one of the questions is who would be in your all time Chorley FC xl I'm doing it from when I've watched Chorley 2004- present. But I was wondering who would be in your all time Chorley team.
Mine is (gaps to be filled in)
GK- Sam Ashton-
RB-
CB- Andy Teague
CB- Kiel O’Brien
LB- Adam Mather
RM- Adam Roscoe
CM – Jamie Vermgilio
CM- Jake Cottrell
LM- -
FW- Steve Foster
Fw- Peter Wright

Just struggling for a right back and Left mid.
But so many top players that have missed the cut- James Mullinuex, Martin Clark, Phil Priestley, James Dean, Josh Hine, Darren Stephenson just to name a few.

Forgot about Ross and Deano was a good shout and as I said unlucky not to make my first thoughts. Foster for me was vital in the first promotion season and his goals were to take us to promotion while Peter Wright from what I can remember was again an excellent goal scorer and top the goal scoring charts or was in the top four or five in the 2005/06 season.

I should just put the league winning squad down in reality.

David Eatock? Would probably put Cottrell out left as he's left footed, Roscoe and Vermo in the middle with Eatock on the right.

Better right backs than Mark Ross, in no particular order:

Colin Jackson
Tony Ward
Paul Varley
Paul Cuddy
Fleming (what was his first name?! I'm getting old)
Matt Challinor

Those older than me may be able to supply more

Always a matter of opinion of course and not to be taken too seriously, but really no place for Darren Stephenson: the only player we've sold into the full time game this century?

I would argue that Peter Wright's sine die ban from football disqualifies him. Loads of great strikers are candidates in addition to those already mentioned - Brian Ross, Tony MacDonald, Terry o'Connor and John Pearson although before my time were highly rated, even Peter McCrae, but surely it is a question of who partners Peter Watson up front?

Cheers Duke Street.
Some excellent names mentioned and some I've forgotten Kenny Mayers being one of them.

Not sure on the book title or when the book will be out but it's been written by someone called Shaun Best and is a follow up to his book Journey to the 72. He has promised to keep me updated as to it's progress.

What about Colin Potts? I know his playing time was before my day but he did return for one game and scored IIRC?

Colin Potts was good from what I remember. A stand out player in a struggling side. The team was effectively the same level as our current team though (one below the conference). Some of the players mentioned above including people like foster, Wright and roscoe had the best seasons in lower level leagues. I would say that fair few of this current squad would get into a modern day select X1. This group that Matt has got now are very good. A lot of you'll will laugh at this but dale Whitman should be in it for me because he's been consistently an important member of the side and is still a very important player even with the club operating at the top end of the conference North. You can count Ashton and Teague in for the same reasons.

And those of an even older vintage might include Ian Smith, Stan Howard, Jack Cross, Don Taylor, Eric Littler, Roland Heald, Ted Hartley and Lovejoy's father Harry McShane. Frank Worthington also played a few games for Chorley. Oh and there was Derek Hogg. Leicester City bought him from Chorley and he went on to play for West Brom and another league club who I can't remember. It may have been Cardiff.
Colin Potts could be the referee.

Are we looking for best players or most effective for Chorley?
Ex Barrow and PNE. Michael Wearmouth. Best centre half.
Possibly Shaun Teale, ex Villa.
Best inside forward must be Matt Jansen, ex Palace, Rovers.

Dave Liptrott - guaranteed a penalty when he was on the field

Paul Moss - he'd bite your legs off!

Andy Mason - poacher from 2 yards.
