Housing for ex-Motors Ground?

Postby Gobsmacked » Fri Nov 14, 2008 11:31 pm

A multi-million pound housing development could be built on a former sports centre site owned by Chorley tycoon Trevor Hemmings.
Mr Hemmings' company, Northern Trust, is planning to transform the eyesore and build 71 homes on it – although some residents have raised concerns about the extra traffic it would generate.

The site in Duke Street is near Chorley Football Club and has been disused for more than 10 years.

It was once the home of the Chorley base of the Leyland Motors Social Club, which was destroyed in a blaze almost 10 years ago.

The planned development on the 3.7acre patch of ground would consist of one-bedroom apartments to four-bedroom family homes, including some affordable houses.

Access would be from Brindle Street where residents have been notified of the development.

Brindle Street resident Amanda Heaton, 36, said: "We received a letter telling us about the proposed development.

"They want to build 71 properties, but it's the last thing that Chorley needs.

"The development on Pilling Lane at the Lex Logistics site has been postponed and that is at the back of our house.

"It would be better if something was put on the site for children to use – maybe even a cinema."

Another resident of Brindle Street, who asked not to be named, said: "We don't want a housing development here because it would cause a lot of problems.

"It should be a sports pitch or a leisure facility as originally intended, but definitely not houses.

"The parking is already really bad around here because of the school nearby."

A spokesman for Northern Trust said: "We are committed to working with the council to provide alternative public sports and recreation facilities within Chorley as part of this development."

It is hoped that the planning application will be submitted at the end of November.
