Totally agree, we were excellent and should have won easily, must get in a finisher. The PC brigade will be on soon saying we are being negative though.

Must admit it would be useful to use a little of the FA Cup cash to recruit a striker or two. Southport have bought Gilchrist from FCUM for a "club record fee". Perhaps we need to look at getting someone in like Fozzie, who gave added momentum when he was signed a few seasons ago.
Jordan Southworth, who I think is still one of our players, is scoring for Prescot -maybe worth re-calling. Or give Darr and/or Pratt a run-out from the bench.

Re game we had much the better of the chances and Hinchcliffe showed his worth for them. It was good to see Matt use a different formation and that it worked (up to a point, no pun etc) but some would comment that at home is the place to show a more attacking attitude. Overall, we would have taken a point before kick-off but two points were lost given our performance.

How much you reckon Stockport will want for Oswell if we put the right amount in for him? He's top scorer in the league now with 16 goals.

We've been saying this for a while now that someone will be on the receiving end of a whipping when we play 90 minutes and convert all our chances.

Good points Ian -thing is we need to convert 2-0 as as Alfreton into the 4-5-6 it should have been.(plus the other recent "dominant" performances that ended in a draw). We need to scout someone good soon -Walshaw, a great striker at our level has gone from Farsley to Scarborough -down a league! -he's the sort of guy we should be looking at.

Just need someone in the 9 shirt to find the net...
All round play is good generally, but we are woeful in the finishing department.

Stockport proved yesterday that a good striker only needs one chance. Strange substitution to bring on Jarvis. Like so many things that Matt does I just don’t understand it. He was poor against colne, harry Pratt was excellent yet Jarvis comes on yesterday and Pratt not even on the bench! Had we gone a goal down who comes on to try and rescue the game? It’s like we aren’t at all interested in scoring goals! It’s very strange given our manager was a striker.

I was surprised to see that both Pratt and Darr started for the U21's on Thursday, effectively ruling them out of even a bench place against Stockport. Think MJ needs to start taking a few more chances as well as our strikers!

Exactly it just sends out the wrong message, Pratt did everything bar score against colne but didn’t get a chance, Jarvis did nothing but got a gig against Stockport. Too safe, too negative and too many favourites! A point at Stockport isn’t a bad result but the fact we didn’t win two easy home games prior to Stockport makes it into a bad result.

There’s just so much about Matt that I can’t understand! He’s so slow to react to what’s going on with the squad. We’ve needed a striker since gonzalez left and we still haven’t brought one in! It’s took 18 month to realise we have a great back 4 and we don’t need an extra CB. Let he changes it for one of the most difficult away games of the season. Even at the end when 1-0 up why not take Jarvis back off and put anson on. Go back to 3 at the back with extra height knowing that they would go direct and launch long balls into our box! The decision making by him off and on the pitch is bizarre

I too am too completely flummoxed by the continued exclusion of two talented young players - who seem to know where the back of the net is. It's so frustrating, we outplay the opposition time and time again, but come away with scraps because we have nobody who scores with any regularity - except Nick Haughton, goodness knows where we would be without his goals ( which, although very welcome, paper over the cracks in our forward line). I read the Stockport forum match report which made it sound like we had long periods in charge of the game, however like most weeks it was a tale of missed opportunities.

FFS do you lot don't think MJ realises that we need a goalscorer!!! He brought in Gornall who was a big head who disrupted the squad so we got rid of him. MJ brought in Hughes and Wilson, proven goalscorers at this level but still we miss chances. The young lads brought in for the Colne game struggled to last 60 mins never mind 90.

Calm down Soapbox! We're talking about introducing young players not throwing them in at the deep end for 90 mins. It's quite possible to make an impact having only spent 30 mins on the pitch, just asking that they get a chance, that's all.

In my opinion that’s a far more ridiculous post than any of us moaners posts. He chased gornell for over a year so if he was a big head then he’s only himself to blame for signing him! He had long enough to find out his character. I also think that is very disrespectful to a solid proven league 2 player. Far more likely that gornell didn’t fancy the way we play and getting kicked all game when he doesn’t need the money. In other words he wanted to play football as a hobby and he wasn’t enjoying it!

Has anyone said that the development squad players should start? harry Pratt is big strong and direct and Jordan Darr is lightening quick both are attributes that a tiring defender hates! Either of those would worry a cb far more than Jarvis if introduced off the bench. Yes they aren’t match fit and neither is black but they won’t get fit by not playing. Start with 10-15min and increase the work load. Incedentally I think the supporters trust should get an award for waqas azam for being the most patient bench warmer in the club’s history.

Most impressed by our team work on Saturday.
When our player was dispossessed there seemed to be another Chorley player there to win the ball back.
Stockport improved after subs came on - theirs and ours.

For final few minutes they could press forward with little threat from our strikers, Haughton and Hughes having been subbed. Agree if wanting to go defensive Anson might have been better option.

Walshaw ... Very much an NPL player now, for both footballing and personal reasons.
Oswell ... No chance ! He must be happy playing in front of 3000+ every home match on a lucrative 2-Year contract.
Gilchrist ... Big loss to FCUM, Hope signing for Southport doesn't stagnate his progress.
Gornell ... Agree with Tempie - MJ chases this summer's ' Marquee ' signing for 12 months, then ...
Warburton ... Would have been a great signing in the summer - Probably the best N.W based 'finisher' playing part-time ?

Hine / Stephenson ... Could either return to V.P if injury-free and playing somewhere near their best ? :|

I agree with the above assessments, Paul. But Daz seems a shadow of his former self and to be honest only really shone when he was with us. Maybe injuries have taken their toll. I'd be looking at Clitheroe's Kurt Willoughby who is a regular scorer -- on the basis that good strikers will still get their goals at a level(or two) higher in non-league. It's always interesting to watch the highlights of other National North games and to see how most teams have players who when they get into position can actually put the ball in the net! Amazing really. We just seem to have to work harder than most to score a goal. Nick Haughton's value to the side in terms of goals alone has been incalculable to be frank.

Generally agree with Paul Speak assessment but let's move on from Stephenson and Hine, Daz was good at Chorley, has been injury prone and done nothing since, Hine has struggled he is Evostik level at best, he can run and throw ball a long way, his first touch is absolutely abysmal, he will struggle to make an impact at Southport. Well worth looking at the lad from Clitheroe.

No thanks to Sampson! He oppitimises everything that we seem to be doing wrong recruitment wise. Another academy product who’s on free fall down the leagues with an agent that’ll say everyone has made a mistake releasing him.

Doesn't score? 6 goals in 16 games ( not all starts )
He works extremely hard, leads the line well and can hold the ball up, is 6ft 2in tall.
Why would we want a player like that????????????????????????

I agree with Soapbox that Sampson would be a good shout. He added a different dimension the team when he played last season. I believe Matt did try to sign him when Macc released him, but he followed the money and went to Southport.
Interesting to see how Walshaw's stock has fallen in a short time. It was only a couple of seasons ago that his agent was touting him around for £800 a week, with Harrogate taking the bait and letting him go after one season.

At least 3 of those goals were very lucky, he was very lazy, he let us down badly by getting sent off for a cowardly elbow then came back to start the final and did absolutely nothing! Probably because his agent had already conned Southport into paying silly wages for a very average player. Ask the Macclesfield fans how good he is.

He has done the "elbow trick" again this season with Southport, not good enough, had a lucky start at Chorley, got no goals at Macc. No good to us, not as good as Carver.

Just to pick up on the last 2 posts - you moan about us not scoring enough goals yet when mentioning Sampson his goals are lucky! If you don't understand GOALS are GOALS. He wasn't lazy for us and gave us an extra option up top. As regards red card unfortunately its part of the game ask Teague, Leather, Jordan etc etc
At least we have 2 football gurus waiting to step in once MJ and co leave

Goals are goals, Jack has 17 in his last 143 appearances going back to 2013, just 1 this season in his 7 games, not prolific! Well not in my book anyway.

He isn’t good enough it’s as simple as that! If he’s not good enough for Macclesfield as a squad player then he’s not good enough for us. The same applied to branagan. If they can’t be squad players at an average national league club they won’t be good enough for a team like us that wants to operate at the top of the national league north. His career is only going one way and that’s down. Next you’ll be saying we should sign Robbie mcdaid! When was the last time we signed players that other teams actually want to keep?

A good point Tempie, there seems to be something flawed in the way we recruit players ( or at least most of them). National League clubs release squad players for a reason, they are not good enough or have a bad attitude. In my humble opinion we should be scouting in the leagues below us looking for ambitious players who want to improve and play at a higher level for a club with ambition and prospects. Additionally they come at a lower wage level. One or two might not make it but occasional diamonds will be unearthed. Surely this is the way forward teamwise and from a financial point of view?
